A second generation of the Pullan family is active in the day-to-day operations of the locally, family owned Jamestown Mattress Company. A business with roots in the community dating back to 1886.
Jim and Louise Pullan purchased the W. I. Blystone Company at 150 Blackstone Ave., Jamestown in 1981 changing its name to Jamestown Mattress Company.
Jim Pullan, a Jamestown native, already knew the bedding industry from his years of experience serving as vice president of Niagara Therapy. His newly formed company, Jamestown Mattress began suppling Niagara Therapy and thus procurring the business it needed to help it get started.
Jamestown Mattress produces it's own line of high quality mattresses and boxsprings, It sells them factory direct through its retail stores as well
as wholesale to other businesses. It also carries a fine selection of daybeds, headboards, futons, bunkbeds and adjustable beds available to the general public.
The Pullans' sons Jim Jr., Steve and Bruce are integral in the operation of the business. Jim Jr. heads up the information services and product costing. Steve supervises production /purchasing and Bruce runs the expanding quilting department. Jim's daughter-in-laws, Pam Pullan is the office manager, manages the Lakewood retail location. In addition, Jim's daughter, Sharon is owner of Robert's Furniture in Corry, PA where Jamestown Mattress bedding is also featured.
The Pullans are continuously striving to expand the company's lines to feature newest materials and construction techniques, along with using these new materials in the quilting process.
In 1994, Jamestown Mattress purchased a quilting machine that enabled it to quilt mattress materials for production and for sale to smaller companies not having the machinery for producing their own materials. It added a 2nd state-of-the-art quilting machine in 2003 to enhance
its quilting capabilities. This allowed the company to introduce deluxe pillow top bedding to their current lines.
To make room for the extra business its new capabilities would create, Jamestown Mattress constructed a new 4000 square foot addition to its Jamestown plant location.
Jamestown Mattress has grown significantly in the past two decades. Besides its Jamestown factory/showroom location, it has expanded into seven other retail markets. In New York they include Fredonia, Lakewood and Olean. In Pennsylvania they include Erie and Warren. In July of 2004 the Jamestown Mattress Plaza was constructed. This new facility, located at 135 E. Fairmount Ave, Lakewood houses a Jamestown Mattress and Robert’s Furniture showroom. Additional store space is available within the plaza for other retailers interested in the Lakewood area. In October 2006, Jamestown Mattress purchased Genesee Mattress. They have stores in Batavia and Henrietta New York.
When Jamestown Mattress first began operations in 1981, it had only three employees. Today, that figure has grown to 35 full time employees working for the company. 26 at the Jamestown plant and 9 more between the other 6 locations.
Annual sales for Jamestown Mattress have grown annually to in excess of 4 million dollars. Much of its success it attributes to increased retail sales through its new locations. In May of 2000, Jamestown Mattress received the SBA Small Business Administration Award from Jamestown Saving Bank for its continued growth and many achievements.
Jamestown Mattress continues to look into opening additional retail outlets. At the same time, they're expanding the quiliting business offering high quality quilted bedding kits to other bedding manufacturers. They're also striving to pursue the adult care, hospital, college and hotel markets.
They invite everyone to stop by anyone of their locations to view the finest in bedding from this family owned and operated company.
